Well, here we are, once again at that time of year when it’s traditional to find the time to count your blessings. That task is easier for some than for others. So, what I thought I’d do is, list my thoughts and perhaps, it will jog your memory so you can see what you have in your life to be grateful for.
I must admit, I’m blessed in so many ways. I have a loving wife, 2 wonderful children, 4 grandchildren, a roof over my head, food on the table, my health (such as it is), and I’m one of the fortunate people who, very early on in life, found their passion. Mine is music. As a child, while most kids were out playing ball or something during summer vacation, I used to sit in my room with a stack of 45’s, a record player, a newspaper, and pretend that I was on the radio. This past September, I entered my 49th year in broadcasting and I get just as much of a kick out of it now as I did back in the beginning. The reason for that is, I know that in some very small way, there’s the possibility that I may have touched someone in a way that only music can. Music takes you places that recall the good times in your past. Even those less fortunate, the homeless for example, have things to be grateful for. The memories of music, homeless shelters where they can go for a meal and to stay warm, knowing that there are people out there who care enough about their fellow man to donate time, food, blankets, shoes, socks, all of the things most of us take for granted.
If there’s one thing about this time of year that drives me crazy, it’s the fact that during this season, we generally try to go that extra mile to be a little kinder to strangers. Yes, it’s a small thing but it means so much to the person on the receiving end. It takes very little effort so why then, can’t we be like this 365 days a year? I have to believe that we would be a much happier race of people if we just show a little extra kindness to those around us on a regular basis.
No matter how dismal life can seem at times, there is always something to be grateful for.You just have to give it some thought. If by chance you draw a blank, consider this. You are alive and there is a God that cares about you, even though at times it may not seem that way.
So during this holiday season, go out of your way and do something unexpected for a total stranger and see how great it will make you feel. Once you feel that greatness, take it as something to be grateful for.
Every so often, I receive an email from a listener regarding a song I may have played and the memory that it created and getting those gives me great pleasure. So, when the mood hits you, email me, and be grateful that you put a smile on my face. I know that I’m grateful for receiving it. This can be a very difficult time of year for some but I hope you dig deep inside yourself and find something that makes you smile. After all, we all deserve to be happy, Even if it’s in the smallest way, it’s better than nothing. Happy holidays from your rock and roll family at Steamboat Radio. We are grateful that you are part of our family. We love you all.
