Prescribed Burns – Mid April through May
Routt County — Prescribed burns will be happening in mid to late April or May near U.S. Highway 40 on Rabbit Ears Pass. This will be on the western boundary of Routt National Forest in the areas of McKinnis and Harrison Creek.
Aaron Voos with the U.S. Forest Service says the prescribed burns will happen as soon as the snow melts and they get a window to get it done. About 300 acres will be affected. The prescribed burns help reduce the threat of wildfires to nearby communities and structures and helps improve wildlife habitat by regenerating shrubs and aspen.
Moffat County — Another area scheduled is about 30 acres of waterfowl and migratory bird habitat to reduce the density of cattails in the Oxbow Wildlife Area. This is in Moffat County, about nine miles northwest of Sunbeam. That burn will happen in late April so as not to disturb migratory bird nesting. So that burn WON’T be happening between May 15 and July 15.

SSHS Juniors and Seniors enjoy prom on May 11, followed by the FREE After-Prom event at the high school. For more than 20 years, parents have organized the After-Prom to keep the kids entertained and in a safe location until early morning the next day. The After-Prom committee has chosen a dazzling theme which will turn the commons area of the SSHS into an unrecognizable place where the kids are entertained from 11.30 p.m. to 4:30 a.m.
Every year, the Steamboat community generously pitches in to help out. This year, the After-Prom committee needs to raise at least $3,000 from parents and individuals in the community, to fund this incredibly popular AfterProm activity. There is a QR Code/Link to be used this year, to make it easier.
SSHS is helping the After-Prom committee by letting them be able to use the Schoolfundr this year to make donations more seamless. The system will fill in a default ‘tip’ to cover the cost of payment processing, but you will have the option to change that amount or not leave a tip.
The event is 100% dependent on financial support from the community. All donations are tax deductible. Checks can also be made out to SSHS After Prom and delivered or mailed to Steamboat Springs High School.
