The Boston Red Sox made one of the biggest moves of the MLB trade deadline Monday, acquiring three-time All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman from the Baltimore Orioles in a blockbuster trade that reshapes the outlook for both American League East rivals. Boston bolstered a key position by adding one of baseball’s premier defensive catchers, while Baltimore received a prospect package headlined by top pitching prospect Anthony Eyanson, along with right-hander Kyson Witherspoon, outfielder Enddy Azocar and major league catcher Carlos Narváez.
Rutschman, 28, was selected first overall in the 2019 MLB Draft and quickly became the face of Baltimore’s rebuilding effort after debuting in 2022. Although injuries have limited him over the past two seasons, he remained a productive contributor in 2026, batting .251 with eight home runs, 47 RBIs and a .764 OPS in 67 games before being sidelined by left wrist inflammation. He is expected to return from the injured list in the near future and remains under team control through the 2027 season.
Boston viewed Rutschman as a significant upgrade behind the plate thanks to his combination of offensive ability, pitch-framing skills and strong throwing arm. The Red Sox paid a steep price, surrendering multiple highly regarded prospects, but the move underscores the club’s commitment to strengthening its roster for a postseason push. Rutschman is expected to take over as Boston’s primary catcher once healthy, replacing a tandem that included Narváez and Connor Wong.
For Baltimore, the trade marks the end of an era for a player long viewed as the cornerstone of the franchise’s resurgence. The decision came despite previous public comments from Orioles president of baseball operations Mike Elias expressing a desire to keep Rutschman long term. However, the emergence of young catcher Samuel Basallo, who signed a long-term extension last year, gave the organization greater flexibility to move its former franchise catcher in exchange for a substantial return aimed at strengthening the club’s future.
