Watch the road and not your phone. Avoid multi-tasking when you’re riding your e-device or bike.
Colorado State Patrol is sending more reminders for using technology while on the road.
Pull over if you have to use your phone. Keep both hands on the handlebars. Avoid headphones or earbuds so you can be fully aware. Make sure you are using lights or reflectors or light clothing so people can see you.

Avoid Distracted Riding, Seconds Matter
E-device riders are vulnerable road users
(COLO) – Along with the rise of e-devices come some of the same unsafe and high-risk behaviors that drivers have struggled with, like avoiding distractions. The temptation to multitask or use technology can impact a rider’s ability to focus on what’s ahead and reduce physical control of their e-device.
“Technology isn’t the enemy, but how and when we use it matters,” stated Col. Mathew C. Packard, chief of the Colorado State Patrol. “Riders need to remove distractions to be able to quickly respond to unpredictable changes in front of them. The faster they ride, the less time they will have.”
Whether using a cell phone while riding or headphones that block out traffic and pedestrian cues, riders need to proactively focus on the path ahead of them and stay connected to the people and vehicles around them.
Stay Connected to Your Environment
- Pull over before using your phone. Even a few seconds of inattention can erase your reaction time.
- Mount your phone securely. If navigation is necessary, use a handlebar mount and glance only when stationary.
- Keep both hands on the bars. Maintain full control of your e-device. Swerving or braking becomes incredibly difficult without both hands available.
- Avoid full-cover headphones. Avoid wearing headphones or earbuds, especially in both ears. Remain fully aware of approaching vehicles, pedestrians and traffic sounds around you.
- Prioritize visibility. Use lights, reflectors and light clothing. Ensure you’re seen even when others aren’t paying attention.
In a recent study on distractions, looking at a cell phone for just 2 seconds at 15 mph, a rider will travel 46 ft. This is the length of three school buses parked bumper-to-bumper. To avoid injury or a crash, riders need to maintain full attention while operating their e-device. Seconds Matter.
The Colorado State Patrol is raising awareness of the risks and requirements associated with micromobility devices. Riders and caregivers should know the rules and local ordinances of where they ride to ensure they are operating both legally and safely. Don’t be an e-DIOT, be safe, and be seen as a responsible e-device rider.
