“I Love Lucy” will become the first recipient of the Television Academy’s newly established Legacy Award, honoring the landmark sitcom’s lasting influence on television 75 years after its debut.  The new honor recognizes television programs that have made a profound, generational impact while maintaining relevance to audiences, culture and the industry.

Television Academy Chair Cris Abrego said, “I Love Lucy truly helped define what television could be,” adding that its creative, technical and business innovations created a blueprint that continues to shape the medium. The tribute will be part of the Emmy weekend, with the first two nights taking place Sept. 5 and 6 and the main ceremony scheduled for Sept. 14, hosted by Mariska Hargitay.

Created earlier this year, the Legacy Award is selected through a process in which the Television Academy’s Special Awards Committee recommends candidates and the Board of Governors makes the final decision. “I Love Lucy” premiered on CBS in 1951 and ran for six seasons, becoming the first sitcom to reach No. 1 in the Nielsen ratings and helping establish many of the conventions associated with the modern sitcom.

Starring Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz as Lucy and Ricky Ricardo, the series also introduced major technical and business innovations. Its production team pioneered filming with three cameras before a live studio audience, while Ball and Arnaz’s decision to retain ownership of the show’s negatives helped establish the foundation for television syndication and future residual structures. The series also broke representation barriers as network television’s first depiction of a dual-ethnicity married couple and featured a pregnant woman on screen.

The show earned 20 Emmy nominations during its original run, winning two for best situation comedy series, while Ball won twice for lead actress in a comedy series. Ball later received the Television Academy’s Governors Award and was inducted into its Hall of Fame in 1984; Arnaz joined the Hall of Fame in 1991. One of the series’ most notable broadcasts, the 1953 episode depicting Lucy giving birth to Little Ricky, drew 44 million viewers, according to the Television Academy.

“I Love Lucy” remains available to stream on Paramount+ and Pluto.
