Friends of the Yampa is looking for volunteers to help collect larvae from dragonflies, to test for mercury. Twelve to 15 volunteers are needed for the fieldwork, being done in remote locations of the Yampa River, in both Routt and Moffat counties, rain or shine, Sept. 15-17. Staff from Dinosaur National Monument will be helping.
From Friends of the Yampa: Volunteers should be comfortable walking in the water, potentially up to your knees/hips. Volunteers will need to bring water, lunch, and should plan on wearing clothes suitable for walking in the river — long pants recommended, be prepared with layers, hat, sunscreen, rain gear, water, and sturdy closed-toe shoes that can get wet — volunteers may need to kick the river bottom to stir up aquatic insects (no boots please).

There is a new nonprofit based in Oak Creek called The Imagine Project. The goal is to support youth mental health and emotional resilience across the Yampa Valley through writing.
This month is the inaugural “Spread Love Campaign.” The project hopes to collect 200 inspiring stories, while building a network of recurring donors to support mental health programming in local schools and groups.
Imagine stories are being collected, as are partners. There is also a monthly newsletter. More information is at TheImagineProject.org.

Steamboat Springs High School now has a Mahjong Club. Here’s co-president Summer Johnson.
“This started because Mahjong really brought all of my friends really close together. We started playing every day after school, and we wanted to share it with other people, to bring other people in the high school close together and teach what we know to them.”
Summer is the co-founder of the club with Julia Sturges, Rocky Worley, and Henley Kerrigan.
More than 20 students showed up to the first Mahjong meeting Thursday, where they watched a video on the rules. They plan to meet bi-weekly.
Johnson says the Steamboat Springs community has donated Mahjong sets and cards. A GoFundMe has raised over $1000. The National Mah Jongg League also donated 65 Mahjong cards to get them started.
