Steamboat Radio News - Shannon Lukens

It is the Memorial Day weekend. Campers are headed our way. All Routt County state campgrounds are fully booked for the holiday weekend. That includes Steamboat Lake, Pearl Lake, Stagecoach, and Yampa River State Park. Only Steamboat Lake and Stagecoach are open for boating. However, the swim and beach areas are still closed. So is the marina. Karl Bunker is the manager at Steamboat Lake.

Campers are being asked to arrive prepared, to do any shopping for food in their home counties, and not here in Routt County if they don’t live here.

The other concern right now is fires. There aren’t any fire restrictions, and the risk of wildfires is low but local fire departments are ready if a wildfire was to start. The hard part would be for firefighters to practice health guidelines if there is a fire.

Preventing Wildfires (from Routt County Government)

  • Build and monitor responsible fires
  • Never burn in windy conditions
  • Report anything suspicious to the authorities
  • Make sure flammable chemicals are in proper containers and stored safely
  • Dispose of flammable/hazardous waste responsibly
  • Extinguish fire pits and campfires when done
  • Don’t throw lit cigarettes out of your moving car
  • Use caution when using flammable liquids
  • Pay attention to local ordinances for trash burning
  • Pay attention to the risk of forest fires in your area

In downtown Steamboat Springs, the Memorial Day weekend means sidewalk sales. Lisa Popovich is with Main Street Steamboat Springs.

Routt County Commissioners and the Board of Health are meeting today to discuss the mask requirements and the next steps to re-opening the community. Right now, masks are required in public, which means all stores and businesses, for all locals and visitors. The Routt County Board of Health meeting with the commissioners starts around 1 p.m. today.

Memorial Day services on Monday will be private at the Steamboat Springs Cemetery this year. That’s so they can comply with the local public health orders. The VFW and American Legion posts will host the private ceremony, which starts at 11 on Monday. Private ceremonies are also being held in Hayden and Craig on Monday.

Some trees are being cut down up at Fish Creek Falls, for annual routine maintenance. The hazard trees are being cut down, according to Tara Umphries with the U.S. Forest Service.

As a reminder, the trailheads are open at Fish Creek Falls but all facilities are closed right now. There are no restrooms, and no trash cans. Fees are also not being collected there right now as well.

Work is being done on River Road for the installation of a buried bypass system. River Road is open now with flaggers, so expect delays. Then on June 1, it is expected to be completely closed for most of the next two months, as the project is expected to take 60 days.

Heading into the Memorial Day weekend, traffic is expected to be lower than normal, according to Colorado Department of Transportation. That’s because of the Safer at Home orders from the state. Trail Ridge Road between Estes Park and Grand Lake hasn’t opened yet, and there is no date on when that will happen. Independence Pass between Twin Lakes and Aspen is expected to open June 1.

And when you are out this weekend, don’t drink and drive. CDOT and Colorado State Patrol have their “Heat is On” campaign running through next Tuesday.
