One of the candidates running for the at-large seat for Steamboat Springs City Council has dropped out of the race. Candidate David Gibbs sent an email to the Steamboat Pilot & Today, saying he was dropping out of the election for personal reasons. The two people who remain, who are running for that seat are Jason Lacy and George Krawzoff. It’s a two-year term. Incumbents Robin Crossan and Heather Sloop are running unopposed in Districts 1 and 3. Michael Buccino is also running unopposed to represent District 2.
City Council meets in Centennial Hall on 10th Street. On Wednesday, a man tried to break in to Centennial Hall, when it was closed. 25-year-old Levi Brockman is from Indiana. He told police when he was arrested that he thought the building was an Airbnb vacation rental and he was trying to wake up someone inside. Police found him in the entrance without pants or shoes, and he had gone to the bathroom and gotten sick, and one of the windows was broken. A breath test showed Brockman had a blood alcohol level of 0.131 percent. Brockman was taken to the Routt County Jail. He has a status conference in court on Oct. 2.
Volunteers will be planting trees along the Yampa River Saturday. It’s part of the Retree annual project, which is celebrating ten years of planting trees in the Yampa Valley. If you can help, sign up at yvsc.org/retree. They’ll start around 8:30. There’s also a 10-year anniversary celebration tomorrow at noon at Rotary Peace Pavilion at Rotary Park. Another Retree planting is Oct. 12. http://www.yvsc.org/programs/retree-steamboat/
Enjoy the turning of the aspen leaves. They’re finally starting to change, maybe a little bit later than normal. The Colorado State Forest Service says it could be because of a fungus that happened because of the moist spring season we had. But enjoy the colors. They’re everywhere you look.
