Some snowmobilers have been fined up to $500 for violating restrictions in Routt National Forest. Seven people were caught snowmobiling illegally in the Mount Zirkel Wilderness area. Two more received citations for snowmobiling in the non-motorized area by Walton Peak. All areas were marked as closed to motorized vehicles.
The new “red flag” gun law went into effect Jan. 1 in Colorado. The law allows citizens to petition a judge to temporarily take away someone’s firearms if that person poses a risk to themselves or others. Colorado is the 15th state to pass the legislation. In Steamboat and Routt County it means new policies and the training of personnel to enforce the extreme risk protection orders. Police officers with the department longer than two years receive week-long crisis intervention training. Sheriff Garret Wiggins says the Sheriff’s Office will evaluate each extreme risk protection order it receives. If he disagrees with any particular protection order, he plans to file an appeal. If a judge denies that appeal, Wiggins says that, by law, he would have to execute that order.
The Steamboat Ice Fishing Tournament had 478 registered anglers at Stagecoach State Park Saturday. The top prize of $4,135 went to Chuck Harrison for the first place trout at 40 inches total. Dustin Clark was second and Michael Beck 3rd. The longest pike went to Pete Walker who won $2,500. First place for youth was Cooper Hyland. The most pike was Lynn Kopasz. The tournament raised $4,900 for the Soroco High School Science Club.
The Hayden Town Council has called a special meeting tonight. The works session is a discussion with the Hayden School District regarding the reuse of the secondary school building. A new school is being built in Hayden, which means the current school will be vacant in the fall. The meeting is at 7 p.m. tonight in Hayden Town Hall.
The first baby of 2020 has arrived in the Yampa Valley. Sterling John Granahan was born Thursday, Jan. 2 just after 8 in the morning at UCHealth Yampa Valley Medical Center. The Granahans are from Meeker and traveled to Steamboat for the scheduled C-section. Baby Sterling weighed in at seven pounds, three ounces.
