Three small fires started in Routt County Sunday afternoon, after heavy storms rolled through the valley. All were under control by Sunday evening. Two fires were started from lightning, one northeast of Oak Creek near Thorpe Mountain. It burned about two acres. The second fire was near the gravel pits south of Milner. The third fire started when a tree fell on a power line in the 10th block of Logan Avenue in Steamboat Springs. The Routt County Office of Emergency Management wants to remind everyone to be careful with campfires and other fire hazards right now.
The Hunt Fire continues to burn in Rio Blanco County. Over 2,300 hundred acres have burned, in a remote area 26 miles southwest of Meeker. It’s burning in an area full of dead trees and thick brush. Two helicopters are working the fire along with firefighters from the Northwest Colorado Interagency Fire Management Unit and fire engines from the BLM. The Hunt Fire started last Thursday because of lightning.
The National Weather Service in Grand Junction is considering changing the angle for its radar in our area. This means more Steamboat skies would be in the forecast, which would mean more accurate forecasts for the Yampa Valley. Forecasters would be able to better predict aspects of incoming storms. The Weather Service is accepting public comments on the proposal through Sept. 18. You can make those comments online at Weather.gov.
