Colorado Parks & Wildlife is still investigating the events that led up to the bear attack on a man in the Whitewood Subdivision last Sunday. Kyle Bond, CPW district wildlife manager, says the health lab found that it was predominantly bird seed in the stomach of the bear that attacked the man. That bear was euthanized. The man was severely injured and required surgery.
Bond says, “There are many bird feeders out in the area, including Steamboat Springs. We would like to remind people that bird seed and feeders should be removed when bears are active through the early spring and late fall seasons and replaced with alternative methods for attracting songbirds.”

The two bear cubs have still not been caught. Bond says they have been very mobile, covering large areas, especially in Whitewood East and County Road 43/41 drainage. “I have removed all traps and I am optimistic they will survive as long as residents make sure to secure all attractants including bird feeders, trash, clean grills, and lock all vehicles and outside doors to prevent any further habituation to human-provided food sources.”
Once again, CPW says the investigation into the bear attack and why it happened is ongoing. Kyle Bond will be reaching out to Steamboat Radio this afternoon for an interview.
