Sidewalks are going in along Highway 40, on the west end of Steamboat. They’ll be between the Community Center, west to Loggers Lane. Connections to the bus stops in this area will also be improved. Improvements will also be made to storm sewers, the water mains, and utilities will be relocated. Traffic may be impacted so plan on some extra time. The project will run through mid-October.

Here is more from the City of Steamboat Springs.

“The project sets the edge for the future four lane highway cross section in this area,” commented Ben Beall. “In addition, pedestrians coming from Pioneer Village, Sunlight and Copper Mountain Estates will now have a convenient and safe way to walk along the highway to access the signal and crosswalk across US40 to the Core Trail and Community Center. Connections to the two transit stops along US40 in this vicinity will also be improved. “

Business access within the construction zone will remain open through the entirety of the project. Two-way traffic should be maintained along US40 with most of the work performed with shoulder closures and occasional one-lane shifts in traffic. If a lane closure is necessary, motorists are asked to use available lanes all the way to the merge point.

“Anyone that lives in the mountains understands that there is limited time to complete projects so they all land in the same window,” continued Beall. “As summer heats up and the community sees additional traffic volumes, please plan on additional time for morning and evening commutes and consider leaving 15 to 20 minutes earlier to spread out peak traffic timing, reduce wait times, and give more time for you to arrive at your destination.”

Duckels Construction was awarded the project contract which got underway this week and is anticipated to run through October 15. The total cost of the project including design, property acquisition and construction is approximately $2M.  A grant from the Colorado Department of Transportation is partially funding the project.
