Volunteers are needed for the 12th annual ReTree event along the Yampa River. It’s from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 2.
Yampa Valley Sustainability Council will be planting about 500 trees along the river, near Rotary Park. The project helps add shade along the river which lowers the water temperature, helps the wetlands along the shore and sequesters carbon. Over the past 12 years, they’ve played over 23,000 trees in the Yampa Valley.
Sign up through the YVSC website and you’ll get a reminder email as the event gets closer.
Here are more details from the YVSC website.
DESCRIPTION
We will plant approximately 500 cottonwood trees along the Yampa River between River Creek Park and Rotary Park. The area is not easily accessible so please be prepared to cross the river in up to 2 feet of water.
Schedule for the day
8:30 a.m. – check in along the Core Trail and sign waivers
8:45 a.m. – cross the river and proceed to the planting site
9 a.m. – plant trees
11:30 a.m. – clean up the planting area
Items to bring
• Work gloves – if you don’t have your own, we will have some extras at the event
• Water – please bring your own water bottle. We will have some extra water available at the site. However, please try to bring enough for yourself for the duration of the event.
• Weather dependent clothing
• Stable, secure footwear for crossing the river
• Your shoes will get wet, so please bring an extra pair of shoes to plant in. Your shoes must be close-toed. Participants will not be allowed to plant in sandals or flip flops.
• Trekking pole (optional) to help with the river crossing
Please park at River Creek Park across Hwy 40 from Walton Creek Road. DO NOT park at Rotary Park. Walk down the core trail until you see our check in table. Please allow enough time to park and get to check in on time as we will be accessing the planting area together. Be prepared for up to a 1/2 mile of walking on somewhat uneven ground, as we will have two planting sites this year.
Children under the age of 12 do not need to take up a volunteer spot but are welcome to attend and help with planting.
