The mating season for moose typically begins about the third week in September, which is now. A large bull moose and a cow moose have been seen around the Fish Creek Falls Road area of Steamboat lately. Be very careful. Colorado Parks and Wildlife officer Josh Dilley says it’s because the moose are going into rut.
When a moose is in rut, it sets up a territory, it fights and it tries to mate. The cows are being pursued by the bull moose and are eating a lot. Both are aggressive during the breeding season. By the end of the first week in October, the rut will end and moose will return to their lives of eating and resting as they prepare for winter. The cows will give birth in May and June.
