Jeff Steck has announced his candidacy for Routt County Sheriff in the November election. He is running as a democrat.
Steck is a retired Navy Commander and Deputy Sheriff out of Southern California. He and his wife have three young children and they have lived in Steamboat for 2 ½ years. He writes, “Law enforcement in the United States is changing, and Routt County is changing. The Sheriff’s Department must move forward with progressive changes to provide the effective law enforcement that its citizens deserve.”
Current Routt County Undersheriff Doug Scherar is also running as a democrat which means both will be involved in the Routt County Democrats caucus on March 5 to get on the November ballot.
From a press release to local media:
The county faces many challenges. According to Steck, the five key issues are:
- The Sheriff’s Department must commit to providing public safety services 24 hours per day.
- A Commitment to Diversity including a pledge to adopt the “30 by 30 Initiative.”
- Create an independent Civilian Oversight Committee for the county.
- Focus on the critical law enforcement challenges of Domestic Violence, Mental Illness/suicide, and the Opioid Overdose Crisis.
- Design a mission strategy based on procedural justice, de-escalation, anti-bias, transparency, diversity and inclusion.
