The Trapper Mine in Craig is scheduled to close down in 2028. That’s due to a state law requiring a reduction in fossil fuel consumption. Right now, the mine has about 125 employees.
Sean Hovorka is the Production Superintendent for Trapper Mine and also a member of Craig City Council. He gave us a tour and first explained the mining process of a pit.
Hovorka says the most economical method of mining coal is with highwall mining. It costs about $11 a ton, as opposed to strip mining which is between $30-35 a ton to mine.
The Trapper Mine also has three draglines used for mining. Hovorka explained how they work.
Finally, Hovorka explained the coal crusher and stockpiles and how they work.
The Trapper Mine is celebrating its 45th production anniversary this year. They have also created the Trapper Mine Foundation Fund, which is being held by Yampa Valley Community Foundation.
We saw some elk when we were there. They’re too pretty not to share.
