Steamboat Springs Police Commander Jerry Stabile is retiring after 30 years with the Steamboat Springs Police Department. He and his wife are moving to the East Coast to be with family.
“I think the number one thing that I’ll miss is just going to the grocery store and knowing about every other person in every aisle, and the support that the community has given to myself and my family and just the fact that I have three children who can call Steamboat their home town. There will always be a part of the Yampa Valley with all of my family but I’m kind of a fierce family family man and I’m making this move and hanging up my badge because I’m going to be with my family.”

Commander Stabile says he is pleased with the Steamboat Springs Police Department right now. One reason is some new recruits who are headed off to the police academy on Monday.
“I feel pretty happy about the timing of this. We were able to secure four spots at a summer academy in Breckenridge and we were able to fill those in record time. So that and with the upcoming commander processes that we’re going to be doing, I feel very good that the police department is going to be in a very good position in the near future.”
Jerry Stabile started as a patrol officer in 1990. He started the DARE Program (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) in 1994. He was then School Resource Officer from 1997-2000. Stabile became a sergeant with Steamboat Police in 2000 and a detective in 2006. He was promoted to commander in 2012.
A Retirement Ceremony is at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 26, at Olympian Hall. The last day for Commander Stabile is June 3.
