A school lockdown at Steamboat Springs High School last Friday caused panic for some of the staff and students. It wasn’t a drill.

That’s junior Pacey Kuhlman. The screaming and running she heard was from the Senior Class of 2022, doing the traditional senior run-through of the school on their last day.

Senior Kaylyn Benson said the students had been told by Principal Rick Elertson not to have the run-through. When they did it anyway, the lockdown was called. Here’s junior Katie McLaughlin.
The girls all told the school board Monday night about what happened Friday. Superintendent Brad Meeks says he met with administrators about lockdown protocol on Tuesday.

The Steamboat Springs Education Fund Board has awarded a record $7 million dollars to public schools and school-based programming in Routt County. Nearly $5.7 million dollars goes to the Steamboat Springs School District. Nearly $4 million of it will be spent on student-facing staff/teaching positions including 45 employees in the district. Hayden School District will receive $357,690 dollars and South Routt School District receives $286,722, among other groups.
Moffat County School Board meets Thursday night. Agenda items include a Retiree Celebration at 5:30 p.m. Two employees are retiring from the Moffat County School District. The regular meeting then starts at 6:30 p.m.

Routt County again has 18 new reported cases of COVID on Tuesday, from the day before. That’s according to the CDPHE. That’s 54 cases in a week.
The 6th grade Street Smarts program started Tuesday at Steamboat Springs Middle School. It continues for two more days. It’s about bike safety for the kids. Here’s Steamboat Springs Middle School Athletic Director Joe Laliberte.
Routt County Riders helped pull the three-day bike safety program together. Kids brought their own bikes but Switchback Sports was on hand to lend bikes to the kids as well. Local law enforcement helped as did Routt County Public Health, who showed kids how to wear a helmet properly. They learned trail etiquette, signaling, and other rules of the road.
The Retirement Ceremony for Steamboat Springs Police Commander Jerry Stabile is at 3 p.m. Thursday, May 26 in Olympian Hall. Commander Stabile is retiring after 30 years with the Steamboat Springs Police Department.
Grand Old West Days get going tomorrow afternoon with the carnival at the Moffat County Fairgrounds. Then the fun ramps up for the holiday weekend with lots of rodeo, the tractor pull, concerts in the evening, and a parade in downtown Craig Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. Find out more at

Colorado State Patrol says to be careful here on the Western Slope, when driving in the mountains this summer. CSP reports eight fatal crashes in Routt and Moffat counties in 2021. CSP says mountain roads and passes have different qualities with steep turns, blind corners, small shoulders or no shoulders at all, single-lane gravel roads, and then there’s the wildlife. Also be careful if you’re towing a camper or trailer. And don’t speed. State patrol reports over 40% of speeding-related crashes occur on non-interstate rural roads in Colorado.
