Craig resident Kaylee Messerly has been found guilty in the death of her daughter and causing serious bodily injury of another daughter. Both are felonies. Messerly’s 18-month old daughter died of hypothermia in March of last year. Moffat County Sheriff’s Officers found an unoccupied vehicle on County Road 54, and then they found Messerly and her 3-year-old. The child had to have her feet amputated because of frostbite. When Messerly was found, she also tested positive for methamphetamines, amphetamines, and THC.
A bear broke into a home in Old Town Steamboat Springs in the middle of the day Wednesday, tearing through a screen door to get into the house. The homeowner was in the basement and heard noises upstairs in the kitchen. When she went upstairs, she met the bear, as she says, they were, “nose to nose.” No food was out, but the bear got into the trash can in the kitchen. Colorado Parks and Wildlife has set a trap in the yard, in case the bear returns.
Colorado Governor Jared Polis has signed the Just Transition bill which would support workers and communities making the transition from coal-based economies. Representative Dylan Roberts helped sponsor the bill.
“Our bill that the Governor signed today is a vital step forward for transitioning communities and demonstrates our commitment to giving them the resources needed to support workers and diversify local economies during this time,” said Rep. Dylan Roberts, D-Avon. “With this new $15 million of funding, communities like Oak Creek, Hayden and Craig will be able to invest in new projects that diversify their economies, incentivize new energy jobs, and provide workers with career services and other supports. I am proud to represent and fight for Northwest Colorado, and this funding is a commitment to protecting those communities and the people that make them great.”

Steamboat Springs City Council passed three short-term rental ordinances by unanimous vote Tuesday night. It shows specific areas of the city where short-term rentals, like AirB&B and VRBO are allowed. City Manager Gary Suiter said the licensing and permitting for short-term rentals will take a couple of months to set up.
“Existing short-term rentals can be grandfathered in. That’s called non-conforming use. So it’s a little confusing but it’s basically a grandfathering. But they do have to apply for permission to do that, to get that registered as a grandfathered use.”
The taxing of short-term rentals will be discussed by City Council on Monday, June 20.
