Colorado Parks and Wildlife is investigating a report of wolf depredation on U.S. Forest land near Meeker. The press release from CPW doesn’t say how many, but does say, “dead domestic cow calves,” on White River National Forest lands near Meeker. They are working with the livestock producer to gather more evident before confirming that the death of the livestock is being caused by wolves.
However Fence Post Ag News is reporting its 18 head of 600-pound calves.
We have reached out to CPW Public Information Supervisor Travis Duncan to confirm the exact number and more information.
No wolf reintroductions have happened yet in Colorado. The wolf depredation incidents in Jackson County and now the alleged incidents near Meeker are not related to or a result of wolf reintroduction efforts in Colorado.
Here is the full prelease from Colorado Parks and Wildlife on Friday.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife investigating report of wolf depredations on U.S. Forest Service land near Meeker
MEEKER, Colo. – Colorado Parks and Wildlife is investigating a report of dead domestic cow calves on White River National Forest lands near Meeker that show damage consistent with wolf depredation. This is an active investigation and CPW is working closely with the livestock producer to collect additional evidence, including looking for scat and tracks in the area. If the depredations are confirmed as being caused by wolves, CPW will work in partnership with the livestock producer to implement approved hazing methods and respond to any damage claims submitted.
It is important to note that no wolf reintroductions have taken place yet in Colorado and recent depredation incidents are not related to or a result of wolf reintroduction efforts in Colorado.
CPW personnel have received wolf-livestock depredation field identification and investigation training from Wyoming Game and Fish. CPW personnel are also well trained and have decades of experience identifying and investigating livestock depredations caused by other depredating species.
CPW also works with Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) and other wildlife management agencies in certain circumstances to get professional opinions regarding wolf depredation investigations such as this, which further contributes to CPW’s body of knowledge in identifying wolf depredations.

Two young bears were hit and killed on Highway 40 Wednesday night, near the intersection of Anglers Drive. When Steamboat Police arrived, one of the cubs had already died and the other was so injured that it had to be put down. The mother and a third cub were still in the area throughout the night crossing back and forth across the highway and circling around in the parking lot at the businesses there. Steamboat Police Sgt. Rich Brown said his officers reported skid marks along the highway of about 100 feet and people who called in said the bears may have been hit by a large semi truck.
All trash cans, recycle bins, and counters have been removed from the Steamboat Springs Post Office. Staff at the local post office has been asking to please take all of your mail and packages home with you to sort and throw away.
