Kaylee Ann Messerly of Craig has been sentenced to 26 years in prison, by Moffat County District Judge Sandra H. Gardner. Messerly was convicted of child abuse resulting in death and child abuse resulting in serious injury. This was from March 2021 when Messerly was found on a county road, in the snow. Her 18-month-old daughter had died of hypothermia and the other daughter had severe frostbite and both of her feet had to be amputated. That daughter and Messerly both tested positive for methamphetamine.
Slash pile burning starts soon in the Medicine Bow and Routt National Forests. Pile burning removes undesirable fuels for long-term public safety. Forest users and the public can expect to see some smoke in the next few months.
The Vaccine Bus is back in Routt County this week for free Flu and COVID-19 vaccinations. The bus will be at Walmart in Steamboat on Friday and this on Sunday, Oct. 16. Register online
The Belated 25th Anniversary celebration for Partners in Routt County is at 6:30 p.m. Saturday night. It’s in the Steamboat Grand Ballroom, and the fun is free. Anyone who has been a part of Partners of Routt County is invited.
Volunteers will be planting trees on a nine-mile stretch of Lower Elkhead Creek, below Elkhead Reservoir Saturday morning. It’s a way to help with bank erosion. Sign up to volunteer

Sleeping Giant School in Steamboat had the kids participating in a Fun Run Thursday. Students were sponsored by friends and family for each lap they ran. Emily McNeal is Vice President of the PTIC at Sleeping Giant School.
“We’re raising money for our school to provide anything our staff needs throughout the year.”
The younger kids ran an obstacle course on the field in the morning. Here are a few of the Pre-K and Kindergarteners.
The middle school kids did a Color Fun Run where they ran through different powdered color stations.
Steamboat Springs Middle School presents Legally Blonde Junior. The school play is at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday nights, with a special 2 p.m. matinee on Saturday.

- The 5-1 Moffat County Bulldogs have a home game against Basalt. It is a special game for cancer awareness so all fans and students are asked to wear pink. There will be a donation booth for a Bulldog Basket. All donations will benefit the Cancer Society of Moffat County, as will part of the ticket sales. Kick off is 7:00 pm.
- It’s Homecoming week for the Hayden Tigers. They host West Grand Friday night. First there’s some volleyball with kickoff for the football game at 7 p.m. The Hayden Homecoming Dance is Saturday night. The Homecoming Parade was Thursday.
