Steamboat Springs High School Principal Rick Elertson has been removed from his position at the high school. He has been principal for a year and a half. The Steamboat Springs Education Association recommended to the Board of Education Monday night that Steamboat Springs High School Principal Rick Elertson be removed from leadership at the high school after three unfavorable staff surveys. Results continued to show a vote of No Confidence in Principal Elertson’s ability to lead the school.
The Steamboat Springs School Board approved a mid-year, no-cause termination of the contract of Principal Elertson and the appointment of administrators to take over day-to-day operations, during a transition period, until an interim principal is hired.
Some fortunate Routt County kids got to go “Shop with a Cop” at Walmart over the past weekend. Sixteen kids met with local law enforcement. Patrol Lieutenant Ryan Adrian with the Routt County Sheriff’s Office organizes the event at Walmart each year.
“It just gives the kids the ability to interact with law enforcement in a positive and happy manner.”
This is the 8th year for Shop with a Cop in Routt County.
The Walmart in Craig also hosted about 13 kids with local law enforcement for Shop with a Cop. Classic Air Medical delivered Santa to the Walmart parking lot. Officers there included Moffat County Sheriffs, Craig Police, Colorado State Patrol, and Division of Wildlife officers.
It’s finals week at Moffat County High School. Tuesday is an All White Day for Class Finals and Wednesday is an All Blue Day for Class finals. The high school sends word that if you don’t take your final, you’ll fail the class. Winter Break for students starts Thursday, Dec. 22.
Winter Break for Soroco and Hayden students is Dec. 26 through Jan. 6. They’re in school this week, and break will start next Monday.
Santa Claus and his big fire truck sleigh are visiting Steamboat Springs neighborhoods every afternoon through Christmas Eve. Santa and his big red fire truck sleigh will hit the road at 4:30 p.m. Today, he’ll visit the neighborhoods of Conestoga, Indian Trails, Sunlight Drive, Sunlight Crossing, the Reserves, West Acres, and West End Village.

Creative nativity scenes are being shared tonight (Tuesday, Dec. 20) in Library Hall at Bud Werner Memorial Library in Steamboat Springs. If you have a unique nativity set or collection, you can come by the library and set it up starting at 4:30 p.m. Christmas music on the piano with Amy Robinson of Hayden starts at 5:30 p.m. Of course, there will be cookies and hot chocolate. The event lasts until 8 p.m.
A Blue Christmas service for those who have experienced loss is at 6 p.m. today. (Tuesday, Dec. 20). It’s at Heart of Steamboat United Methodist Church, 8th and Oak, in Steamboat Springs. The service will also be live-streamed and can be viewed from HeartOfSteamboat.com or on the church’s Facebook page. (facebook.com/umcsteamboat) The service is to support individuals who are grieving or feeling down this holiday season. Northwest Colorado Health’s Hospice program is hosting the service in partnership with local faith-based communities.
Holiday story time is at 4:30 p.m. today in Craig (Tuesday, Dec. 20). It’s for cowboys and cowgirls of all ages. Wear your best western duds and come sit a spell to enjoy two Christmas story classics, told Western Style and the Moffat County Library in Craig.
The 21st Annual Murphy Roberts Holiday Classic continues today. The Giant Slalom is today at Steamboat Resort. The night slalom is Wednesday at Howelsen Hill with another slalom during the day on Thursday.
