The next time you renew your license plates, you’ll find a $29 fee. It’s the Keep Colorado Wild Pass added to vehicle registrations through the Colorado Department of Motor Vehicles. It starts Jan. 3. Here’s Bridget O’Rourke who is the Statewide Public Information Officer for Colorado Parks and Wildlife.
“This pass is exciting because it aligns with the Colorado way of life, where our residents really want to connect with our outdoors and our residents care for Colorado and we’re very grateful to live in this state and we really want to take steps to keep our landscapes healthy. It also supports our local communities. They money raised from this pass goes towards helping our Search and Rescue teams, avalanche control and growing our outdoor educational programs and outdoor accessibility for our residents.”
You can opt out of the $29 fee. Traditionally, a State Park Pass is $80. Your registration card will have a sticker on it that shows you’ve paid, which you would show to an officer when you enter a state park.
Colorado State Parks in Northwest Colorado include Stagecoach, Yampa River State Park, Elkhead Reservoir, Steamboat Lake and Pearl Lake.
Here’s more from Colorado Parks and Wildlife about the Keep Colorado Wild Pass.
Keep Colorado Wild Pass
As Coloradans, we live life outside – and with that comes the responsibility for all of us to care for Colorado and keep it wild.
Starting in 2023, Colorado residents will see a $29 Keep Colorado Wild Pass added to their annual vehicle registration through the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV).
This new annual pass gives all Coloradans access to state parks and the added benefit of supporting our great outdoors and wildlife in a meaningful way.
Colorado is home to world-class state parks, more than 960 species of wildlife and 23 million acres of public lands, ranging from wetlands to forests, canyon landscapes to mountain lakes. So it is no surprise that Coloradans cherish an outdoor lifestyle and want to protect the wild spaces and wildlife they treasure.
The new Keep Colorado Wild Pass saves you more than 60% compared to the traditional state parks pass. Plus, it’s way more than park entry, the money raised from pass sales supports your local:
● State park systems
● Search and rescue teams
● Avalanche safety programs
● Wildlife conservation efforts
● Outdoor accessibility and educational opportunities
All of Colorado wins when you choose to stay opted in!
