TWO WOLVES ARE CAPTURED AND COLLARED IN JACKSON COUNTY THURSDAY

The Colorado Parks and Wildlife investigation into the deaths of calves near Meeker has closed with no real solid answer. A pack of nine dogs was discovered harassing wildlife seven miles away, which made officials think it wasn’t wolves that did the killing. They just aren’t sure what killed the cattle on the Klinglesmith Ranch in Rio Blanco County. Larry Klinglesmith says he will not be pursuing compensation for what was first thought was a wolf kill.
At Tuesday night’s Steamboat Springs City Council meeting, council agreed to invest a maximum of $5,000 to explore potential litigation with eight other mountain communities against the U.S. Postal Service. It’s due to substandard service at the mountain town post offices. In the least, City Manager Gary Suiter said maybe it will get their attention.
Suiter also said he spoke with the police department after the recent resignation of Police Chief Sherry Burlingame. He says they want the public to know that they take their jobs seriously, they are professionals, and they care deeply about the community. Rich Brown has also been appointed to serve as an interim commander.
The Steamboat Springs Swim Team is losing their training pool at the end of the summer. It is being torn out for a new lap pool at Old Town Hot Springs. The swimmers will have nowhere to go after Labor Day, for about nine months. Many have college aspirations in swimming and they won’t have anywhere to train. Tyler Stone is a junior at Steamboat Springs High School.
“Missing this means missing college opportunities. To me, that’s not as much of a big deal because I wasn’t going for that. But for a lot of these other kids, it is important to them.”
The team is hoping someone somewhere in the community can let them use a lap pool. Charlie Coates is the Head Coach.
“I just need a pool. I don’t need it for seven days a week. I just need a couple hours in the water. Nine months without a pool is going to be super hard for some of these guys. I’m just asking the Steamboat community for help.”
Three Steamboat swimmers swim for Moffat County, which has four swimmers, and one other swimmer from Meeker. They’re all headed to the State Championships in Thornton this weekend. There is a sendoff at 9 a.m. Thursday at Moffat County High School.
