In news from the Steamboat Springs Post Office…
- The back part of the parking lot, where the mail trucks park to get the mail to deliver, has now been plowed. The post office delivery vehicles were having to park in Fish Creek Falls Road but now it’s plowed, and part of the plower’s contract is to keep it clear. This is according to the corporate office out of Denver.
- The postal service sent in a custodian from Alamosa who is here for two weeks. He cleaned and polished all of the floors in the Steamboat Springs Post Office on Sunday, since there hasn’t been a custodian since the fall. The post office was closed Sunday when the work was being done. The postal service is taking bids from outside contractors to do the custodial work. Please reach out to Fernando, the postmaster, if you are interested. Fernando.Castro@usps.gov
- The corporate office says their legal team is looking into whether making people pay for PO Boxes when they have no other way to get their mail is legal. That won’t happen quickly but they tell Steamboat Radio News that they are working on it.
- The post office is hiring. Listings show that it is “Non-career 360-day term with possibility of reappointment.” David Rupert with USPS in Denver says, “Every postal employee starts that way and after a probationary period they’ll be eligible for career consideration. They are termed ‘part time’ because they don’t have an immediate set schedule as new hires. It’s simply a job classification. In Steamboat Springs, there will be plenty of hours immediately. And the full suite of benefits will come very quickly.” Keep an eye on the USPS website because the job listings change frequently. Apply here
- Denver7 was in Steamboat Springs Monday to do a news story on the local post office and the fact that people are having to pay for P.O. Boxes when they have no other option. Reporter Russell Haythorn and Drew Smith, the cameraman, interviewed ten people throughout Routt County. We will share that link when it is available.
- They are also doing a news story about the swim team that won’t have a pool to practice in in the fall. The local lap pool is being torn out for a new one to go in. 9News did a story on that Monday as well and it airs at 5:30 p.m. and on Tuesday morning.
- And as a reminder, be respectful and nice to the local postal clerks. In the interviews done with residents today, they thanked the hard-working employees at the Steamboat Springs Post Office and spoke of how much their efforts are appreciated and how we know they are doing the best they can. (And one employee came out to thank me, and hugged me. –Shannon Lukens)
