Steamboat Springs Board of Education Appoints Dr. Matthew Rice to Fill Board Vacancy
Rice Will Hold the Position Until November Elections
Steamboat Springs, CO – February 13, 2023 – The Steamboat Springs Board of Education appointed Dr. Matthew Rice at their meeting this evening to fill the vacant position on the Board. Rice will serve on the Board until elections are held in November. He will be sworn in before the next board meeting.
Rice, a retired Army veteran of 32 years, moved to Steamboat in 2019 and has two children in the school district. In executive roles as the Chief of the Medical Staff of two large organizations, the largest of which provided medical care to over 40,000 beneficiaries, he developed policies and procedures resulting in significant improvements in patient satisfaction, staff accountability, access-to-care times, and more.
“As a resident of Steamboat Springs with two children in the District, I have a vested interest in the success of our schools in their service to pupils and their parents and guardians,” Rice said.
This evening, the Board of Education members interviewed three candidates during a special meeting to fill the open position. The interviews were open to the public and live-streamed on the school district’s website. Additionally, all of the submission materials provided by the candidates are available to the public.
In November 2023, three Board of Education seats will be decided in the elections. The positions held by Lara Craig, Alissa Merage, and Rice will reach the end of their terms and will be on the ballot. In August, the District will put out a call for nomination of candidates for school directors to be placed on the ballot for the regular biennial school election to fill the three seats.
“We are thrilled to have Rice join our Board of Education,” said Dr. Celine Wicks, Superintendent. “Rice has exceptional leadership experience and a genuine interest in helping our school district be the best it can be. I look forward to working closely with him.”
