In a Steamboat Springs Post Office Update…
James Boxrud with USPS Strategic Communications out of Denver has been in Steamboat Springs this week to meet the local staff. He has been here to see what else needs to be done to keep up with the mail delivery.
“We’ve hired drivers, we’ve hired employees, cleaned the facilities, got our parking straightened out, we’ve got Safety Task Force Teams coming up, making sure that our employees are safe and our customers are safe, and trying to stabilize the delivery that we didn’t have a month ago.”
While at the downtown post office, Boxrud met with Steamboat Springs City Council member Gail Garey. She emphasized the importance of figuring out if residents still have to pay for a P.O. Box when they have no other way to get their mail, like Garey who lives in Old Town Steamboat Springs. Boxrud says they are working on it but it will take some time. Garey asked that he keep us informed as to the progress.
Boxrud also met Rebecca Boucha, whose car was damaged when the parking lot was so icy and her car rolled into the outside post office. He asked her to reach out so he can help escalate her claim. She showed him the damage to her car. At least six other cars were damaged in the post office parking lot, before the ice could be cleared from the lot on January 27.
ICY RUTS IN POST OFFICE PARKING LOT ARE CAUSING DAMAGE TO VEHICLES
As for the unused Cluster Box at AlpenGlow Village behind Walgreens which has sat idle for over two years, no one has been able to find the keys to the box. So Boxrud and the local postmaster are re-keying those 80 boxes on Wednesday. They’ll get the addresses to the carrier and work with the Yampa Valley Housing Authority to help establish delivery for those residents, which will hopefully be soon.
“We have good keys. Hopefully it will be a smooth process once we’re ready to start delivery.”
The United States flag was also missing at the Steamboat Springs Post Office. Boxrud says he made sure Steamboat Springs had a new flag and a POW-MIA flag and both are now on the flag pole.
Also, workers are removing snow from the roof today.
Finally, U.S. Senator John Hickenlooper’s office has reached out to Steamboat Radio News for an exclusive interview with the senator next week about the post office situation in Steamboat Springs. We’ll keep you posted.
