Another moose had to be euthanized by Steamboat Springs Police over the weekend. It was a yearling, frequently seen with its mother in neighborhoods along Fish Creek Falls Road.

Steamboat Springs Police report that the young moose was hit by a Toyota Tacoma truck at Tamarack and Kelhi Court at 9:30 p.m. Saturday night. It fell in the roadway and then was hit by another vehicle, which stopped on top of the moose. Steamboat Springs Police were called and had to euthanize the young moose.

Neighbors in the area now say the mother is still there, wandering around, and not wanting to leave the area.
Rachael Gonzalez is with Colorado Parks and Wildlife. She says this is a good reminder for people to slow down.
“Animals right now are using those roadways to travel because it’s easier for them to travel. They’re trying to conserve that energy as we get through these last couple of months of winter time. Again, just paying attention, especially at dawn and dusk.”
Daylight Savings Time is also affecting wildlife.

Two other moose have been hit by vehicles in Steamboat Springs this year, and had to also be euthanized. One was Jan. 28 on Aspen Wood Lane. The second was Feb. 9 on Broad Street in Old Town Steamboat Springs.
