A cow moose that was frequently seen with her two yearling calves along Butcherknife Trail off of Stehley Park, has died. Residents in the area saw her last night and said she didn’t look good.
Then this morning, her body was in the snow, on the opposite side of the creek from the trail. Colorado Parks and Wildlife was informed and came to assess the situation.

Rachael Gonzales with Colorado Parks and Wildlife told Steamboat Radio News, “CPW did remove a cow moose from the trail. Foul play is not suspected. Cause of death can’t be officially determined. However, it’s believed she died from poor health/body condition.”
The moose and her calves were frequently seen around Old Town Steamboat Springs and along Butcherknife Creek. These pictures were taken Thursday, April 20, at Heart of Steamboat United Methodist Church on Oak Street.
The calves can still be seen in the downtown area. They were near Perry Mansfield on Wednesday. Thank you to Matthew Wood for sharing this picture with Steamboat Radio.
