Bears are coming out of hibernation and looking for food. Colorado Parks and Wildlife office in Steamboat Springs reminds everyone to bring in your birdfeeders, lock up your trash, keep your doors and windows secure from bears, and lock your car doors. They’ll get in. And if the door shuts and they can’t get out, that’s when it’s really bad and you don’t have a car anymore.

Items from the old Moffat County offices are available this Friday and Saturday. This is at the old courthouse building, the extension office, and the DHS-Social Services Building. You have to sign a waiver to get in. Then all of the desks, chairs, filing cabinets, white boards, and anything else is “as is.” Hours are 4-8 p.m. Friday, May 12, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 13.

Free mulch is available for Yampa Valley residents. It’s at the SavATree yard which is at 2645 Jacob Circle, Unit #1. Pick up the mulch Monday through Friday during normal business hours.

The Agriculture Education Building was officially dedicated Wednesday night, at Soroco High School in Oak Creek. Dr. Kirk Henwood is the superintendent of the South Routt School District.

“Because not only are we a model and a go-to for the state, but really we’re a model for the nation and people come from around the nation to see our program. And not only what current agriculture looks like in the future.”

The FFA program at Soroco High School kicked off with a grant for over $1,000,050, and more grants have followed. That has resulted in a second ag teacher for the program, Reece Melton. And also kitchens, classrooms, and a greenhouse.

Applications for grants from the Yampa Valley Community Foundation are now open for the 2023 cycle. This is for Moffat and Routt County nonprofits and organizations. Apply through the website at YVCF.org. Grant requests are up to $7,500. June 11 is the deadline.

The Craig Chamber of Commerce is helping with any Moffat County groups that want to know more about how to apply for a grant. It’s from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Friday, May 12, at the Craig Chamber, 775 Yampa Ave.

This is Teen Safety Week in the Yampa Valley. Today’s focus is on Mental Health and a Sense of Belonging. Specific events like prom and graduation can create feelings of isolation and alienation. But you aren’t alone. The Mayo Clinic says to make an effort to engage and be mindful of others. Keep and teach an open mind and practice acceptance. Communicate and spend time with your teenager, and volunteer at their school.

Today is a Teen Safety Fair. It’s from 4-6 p.m. today at the Steamboat Springs Community Center. Here’s interim Steamboat Springs Police Chief Mark Beckett.

“Historically, around this time of year, with proms and different graduations going on, we see an increase in accidents and alcohol and drug related incidents with kids. This is an opportunity to educate, reach out to our kids, and talk to them about the importance of making good decisions.”

Many great groups and agencies will be there, as will Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue. Again, it’s from 4-6 p.m. at the Steamboat Springs Community Center.

The Vaccine Mobile Bus is back in Steamboat Springs on Thursday, May 11. It’s at the Stockbridge Transit Center from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Vaccines are free. You don’t need insurance or an ID. Just stop in.

Tonight…

Western Slope Legislators are hosting an end-of-session Virtual Town Hall. It’s from 5-6 p.m. tonight. A link to register is on the Community Calendar on our website. Link to register

Meet Routt County resident and author Robin Schepper for a book signing of “Finding My Way” at Off the Beaten Path, also brought to you by Penny Fletcher with Steamboat Sotheby’s Real Estate. The book signing is at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, May 11.

The Steamboat Springs High School Orchestra took a recent trip to California and was awarded a first-place, gold ranking at the WorldStrides Music Festival. The High School Select Choir went as well.

Youth Paint and Sip is Thursday, May 11 at the Center of Craig. This is a Free Painting Class for middle school and high school kids from Craig and Hayden.
