It is June 1, and today is the last day of school for kids in the South Routt School District. The last day of school for students in the Steamboat Springs School District is tomorrow, June 2.
But today is the last day of school for all Steamboat Springs 8th graders. It’s a class of about 180 kids. Half of the class is on a raft trip today. The other half went rafting yesterday. Those not on the raft trip got to do a dunk tank at the school. Jackson Schutt was the first to dunk his teacher, Mr. Bender, on Wednesday with a simple strategy.
“Aim for the target.”
Then Charlie Ormescher came along to throw his pitch with Middle School principal Heidi Chapman-Hoy in the tank. Here’s both of them.
“I was trying to dunk my principal in a dunk tank.” “He’s been waiting to do it for the last three years. Right? Ha ha ha.”
The 8th graders also toured Steamboat Springs High School where they will be freshmen next year.

Some Yampa Valley High School students have been selling soap and other handmade items this spring, at the Community Ag Alliance building at 8th and Oak. Raven McLaughlin is a sophomore. It’s part of their entrepreneurship class.
“We kind of voted on everything that we wanted to do. We decided soap was the easiest. We also have keychains.”
All of the money raised goes back into the program at the high school.

June is Yampa River Month.
