Bears are looking for food, and trying to get into cars and houses. Colorado Parks and Wildlife has already had to euthanize two bears in Steamboat Springs. Keep your doors locked on your homes and vehicles at all times. And also try to scare the bears away. But don’t try to shoot them to haze them which is what may be happening in one Routt County neighborhood. Here’s Colorado Parks and Wildlife Area Wildlife Manager Kris Middledorf.
“You can bang pots and pans. You can make a bunch of noise. But we don’t need people taking it into their own hands, using firearms to shoot at bears.”
Steamboat Radio News has learned of a family of bears in the Tree Haus neighborhood. Neighbors have been making noise to scare them away. But they also say one neighbor has been taking a gun out and trying to shoot the bears in the neighborhood. Here’s Routt County Undersheriff Josh Carrell.
“We are here to protect everyone, especially if anybody feels unsafe, we encourage you to contact the Routt County Sheriff’s office or law enforcement immediately. We ask that everyone is responsible gun owners who possesses them.”
One neighbor says they have respectfully requested of the neighbor not to shoot a gun at the bears anymore in the neighborhood. If it happens again, neighbors plan to reach out to the Routt County Sheriff’s Office.
