Blood Donors Sought to Prevent Summer Shortage

World Blood Donor Day June 14 Highlights Critical Need

CRAIG, Colo. (June 14, 2023) — Aiming to prevent a summer shortage, Vitalant, one of the nation’s largest nonprofit blood services providers, urges all eligible donors to make an appointment in June to donate blood and meet a critical need for patients. World Blood Donor Day is today, June 14, recognizing generous donors and raising awareness that it takes volunteers coming forward daily to ensure a readily available blood supply.

Every two seconds, a patient needs a blood transfusion, and the average patient transfusion requires more than two units of blood. All blood types are needed to maintain an adequate supply, especially type O. O-negative blood can help patients regardless of blood type. O-positive can help all patients with a positive blood type. Platelets help stop bleeding and promote healing and most often are used to help cancer patients.

All who come to donate with Vitalant in June will be automatically entered into the “Big $10K Giveaway” to win one of two, $10,000 prepaid gift cards, redeemable by email. Learn more, review eligibility requirements and make an appointment to give at vitalant.org, download and use the Vitalant app or call 877-25-VITAL (877-258-4825).
