The bear that received worldwide attention because of a video of it crawling in and out of a top floor window of a home in Steamboat Springs was caught Tuesday by Colorado Parks and Wildlife, and euthanized. The cinnamon colored bear was caught near the campus of CMC in Steamboat Springs. It had gotten into multiple homes.

CPW District Wildlife Manager Kyle Bond says it was a threat to human safety.

“Once those bears start feeling comfortable going into homes that are actively maintained by people, all it takes is a startled bear or a bear that feels cornered within a home, if there’s children home, if there’s pets home, that can create a very violent situation very fast. I’ve seen those first hand what they look like and it’s not something that we’re going to tolerate when a bear enters a home. It gets put down.”

Bond says to please check your doors and windows to make sure a bear can’t get in. He and other wildlife officers went around to Steamboat Springs neighborhoods yesterday to tell people why they have to shut their windows. The carcass of the bear will be donated to an outdoor sportswomen’s group. This is the fourth bear to be put down so far this year in Steamboat Springs.

“To be able to grow with the community, add a new fire station, protect our firefighters, and serve the community better… It’s amazing and long overdue.”

The new building on 10th Street, between Oak and Lincoln, is expected to be finished in fall of 2024. The 10th Street parking lot is now permanently closed.
