The Moffat County Sheriff’s Office has appointed new roles and leadership responsibilities among officers. Chip McIntyre has been appointed as the new Undersheriff.
“It’s just an honor to be appointed by the sheriff into this position and it’s great to work for him and I look forward to this opportunity.”
McIntyre was appointed after the retirement of Charlene Abdella. McIntyre has been in law enforcement for 28 years, and with Moffat County since 2014. He was previously with the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office from 1995 to 2001, and then joined Colorado State Patrol and Grand Junction Police, before returning to Moffat County.
Sergeant Nathan Businger has been promoted to Operations/Investigations Lieutenant.
Patrol Deputy Matt Hammer has been promoted to Patrol Sergeant.

MOFFAT COUNTY SHERIFF K.C. HUME SWEARS IN NEW LEADERSHIP TEAM
MOFFAT COUNTY, CO – Sheriff Hume announced today the swearing in of new leadership within the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office. This change was a result of the retirement of Undersheriff Charlene Abdella in April 2023. With Abdella’s retirement, several leadership roles were adjusted . Sheriff Hume appointed personnel within the organization to new roles and leadership responsibilities.
One of the notable changes was the appointment of new Undersheriff Chip McIntyre. Chip is a 28-year law enforcement veteran who began his career with the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office in 1995. Undersheriff McIntyre left the Sheriff s Office in 2001, joining the Colorado State Patrol from 2001 to 2006 . In 2007, Undersheriff McIntyre continued his law enforcement carrier with the Grand Junction Police Department where he remained until rejoining the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office in 2014. Prior to
his new appointment, Undersheriff McIntyre was the Commander for the All Crimes Enforcement Team (before being promoted to Operations/Investigations Lieutenant at the Sheriff’s Office in 2019.
With Undersheriff McIntyre’s appointment, Sergeant Nathan Businger was promoted to Operations/Investigations Lieutenant. Lieutenant Businger started his law enforcement career with the Colorado State Patrol in 2007, joining the Craig Police Department in 2018 where he was promoted to Patrol Sergeant in 2021. Businger joined the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office as a Patrol Sergeant in 2022.
Patrol Deputy Matt Hammer started his law enforcement career with the Moffat County Sheriff’s Office in 2019 Deputy Hammer’s leadership skills, commitment to excellence and drive to serve the citizens of Moffat County made him the top candidate to fill the Patrol Sergeant’s position.
The swearing in ceremony of the new leadership team marked an important milestone in the agency’s history, as it signified the start of a new era of leadership. The sheriff praised the new appointees for their track record of excellence and outstanding performance in their past positions with in the agency. He expressed his confidence in their ability to effect positive change, lead effectively, and build upon the Sheriff’ s Office legacy.
