The Ride ‘n Tie Days Rodeo is tonight at the Moffat County Fairgrounds. It’s followed by fireworks in Craig when it gets dark. Craig Fire Rescue is shooting off the fireworks on the hill by Moffat County High School.
The Town of Yampa is also hosting fireworks tonight.
The Town of Rangely has fireworks at Kenney Reservoir.
As a reminder, leave the fireworks to the professionals. Any fireworks that explode or leave the ground are illegal in Colorado. Last year in Colorado, an estimated 11,500 people were injured due to fireworks or sparklers and fireworks started an average of 18,500 fires. DON’T USE ILLEGAL FIREWORKS
Plus, it really panics the pets. FIREWORKS CAN CASE PETS TO PANIC
It is 4th of July. All city and county offices are closed on Tuesday.
Dr. Temple Grandin spent Sunday in North Routt County, learning about virtual fencing for cattle. The technology from Merck Animal Health is called Vence, where cattle are collared with online GPS tracking. The herd manager can then set up virtual fencing lines to manage cattle movement and facilitate rotational grazing using a computer, tablet or smartphone connected to a base station. It can also reduce the costs of labor and fencing materials
“You’ve got big ranches here. It would be really interesting to see how the collars work, how the base stations work. I think that might be a really great option in the future, to make rotational grazing so much easier.”

The Vence virtual fencing is being used in 14 states, and in North Routt County where the topography is difficult for building fences. JP ELY is a 5th generation Routt County rancher.
“I think it’s going to be so beneficial to be able to manage these cattle and not only be able to keep them out of certain areas but also be able to see where they’re at, and be able to go up in the fall time and know exactly where they’re sitting, and come down with a whole group of cattle, and put them at home and be ready for the fall shipping time.”
Pricing for the Vence Virtual Fencing starts at $10K for the self-install base station, and each collar is $40 per year. The collars are set to automatically come off under 600 pounds of pressured force.
Here are the costs for the Vence Virtual Fencing.
- $10K for the Self-install Base Station
- $12.5K for the Vence Assisted Install Base Station
- $40 per collar per year for the Annual Subscription Fee, which includes software, customer support and collar replacement if needed
- $10 per unit for Collar Batteriess which last for six to nine months
The tour of Northwest Colorado was hosted by the Routt County CSU Extension office.

Some of the residents in Sleepy Bear Trailer Park have no water pressure. The park manager says one leak was fixed a couple of weeks ago but there is another leak affecting 11 units. He says he was calling Native Excavating to help find the leak and hopes to get it fixed soon. The Sleepy Bear Trailer Park is on a well and not on city water.
Two neighborhoods will be impacted for the next two weeks by utility projects in Steamboat Springs. They are Riverside and the Stehley Park-Logan Avenue area. The projects start tomorrow (Wednesday, July 5) and should take about two weeks. In the downtown project, the city is changing over the sewer services from the old clay tile sewer main to a newer PVC sanitary sewer main. The pedestrian path for Stehley Park will be closed. In the Riverside area, water will be shut off for six hours during the day Thursday to do maintenance on the water main.
