Liz Schnackenberg of Steamboat Springs has received a national award from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. It’s the “Wagon Wheel Gap” honor, given to a hydrologist or hydrologic technician who works on the nation’s forests and grasslands oversees. Schnackenberg dedicated over 30 years to the U.S. Forest Service by contributing watershed hydrology knowledge on the local, regional, and national level. She traveled to Portugal on a Fulbright scholarship to help with recovery and restoration following wildfires. Schnackenberg was given the honor recently at the USDA’s Whitten Building in Washington DC.
The teenager who was reported missing has been found. The Garfield County Sheriff’s Office says 16-year-old Ayla Marie Weston has been returned to her parents. This was in Garfield County but Weston is originally from Craig.
The Yampa Valley Balloon Rodeo is still looking for help with lodging for the pilots coming to town for the event at the end of the month. Lodging is needed for two or three nights, July 28-30, for the visiting pilots, some of whom have been coming to Steamboat Springs for more than 35 years. This can be a local condo or townhome, or with local homeowners and second home owners.
Those who can help with lodging will be given a balloon ride on Sunday. Also, no spectators are allowed at the event this year, so plan on finding a good spot in town to watch. Karen Beauvais and Scott Flower are organizing the Yampa Valley Balloon Rodeo this year. You can reach out to Karen Beauvais through the local Coldwell Banker office.
