They are all women, and they are ready to fight fires. The Rocky Mountain Youth Corps has debuted the first-ever, all-women fire mitigation crew this summer. They’re actually a chainsaw crew doing fuels reduction work. But they are ready in case there is a wildfire. Here’s Ashley Roscoe with Rocky Youth Mountain Corps.
“Historically we have had co-ed saw crews and we thought it might be really cool to do an all women’s crew just to have a really supportive learning environment for women.”
The nine women are between 18 and 23 years old. They’re working ten weeks in the field, throughout the Medicine Bow and Routt National Forest, including the Thunder Basin Grassland in Wyoming, which is where they are clearing trails today. The program is designed to recruit people into federal jobs.

Steamboat Symphony Orchestra is launching String Sprouts, in partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of Northwest Colorado. It’s a nationwide program that provides five years of instruction for violin, viola, cello, and bass to young children that would otherwise not have the means and access to learn to play a string instrument. Conductor Ernest Richardson says it teaches kids the language of music.
“Because they learn a new language which then transfers to learning the language of English, to being in school, to understanding math, all the things that prepares them for being successful in school.”
Kids in String Sprouts can start as young as three years old. The website says early childhood music education has been shown to improve classroom behavior, extend attention span, strengthen motor skills and hand-eye coordination, and give kids a jump=start on academic subjects.

Remember that Fetcher Park Road in Steamboat Springs will be closed most of the day today for Dust Mitigation Treatment. It’s a popular drop-in spot for tubing the Yampa. It should reopen for the weekend.
