Five-time Olympic Gold Medalist Missy Franklin is in Steamboat Springs. She stopped by the Old Town Hot Springs pool to see the swim team kids at practice. That’s when she learned that the pool will be closed for nine months, starting in late August, as first report in February on Steamboat Radio News.
“We just wanted to pop on here and say if you’re a local in the area, and if you have a pool that you are willing to lend for the swimmers to come and train, so that they can keep doing what they love and pursuing their dreams, we would just be so grateful for the opportunity. You guys can message me, reach out, I can pass along information to Zoe, her coach, or her team, but we would just be so grateful.”
Missy Franklin says in an Instagram post that she just bought a place in Steamboat so she said, “We’re locals now.”

A new foundation in Steamboat Springs is supporting local outdoor organizations. An endowment fund has been set up at Yampa Valley Community Foundation for the NICK WOULD Foundation. 25-year-old Nick Simon grew up in Steamboat Springs and died last fall in a car accident while on a surfing trip in New Zealand. Eugene Buchanan is friends with the family and is on the board of the foundation.
“It awards money to local endeavors that are near and dear to Nick’s legacy and heart, getting people outside, helping preserve the environment, supporting the culture and the arts. These are three things that were very important to Nick, and this is just our way to help his legacy live on.”
Grants from the NICK WOULD Foundation just went to Friends of the Yampa, STARS, the Steamboat Springs Free Summer Concert Series, and Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club. The New York Times singled out rafting on the Green and Yampa Rivers, through Dinosaur National Monument as one of the best suggestions for a less crowded alternative to visiting one of the nations 63 national parks this summer. The article says there has been an explosion of visitor numbers since the pandemic, with booked campsites, busy trails, and timed entry requirements to get in to big-name parks. But Dinosaur National Monument only had 350,000 visitors in 2022, and it is a perfect destination for ancient dinosaur fossils and petroglyphs. Dinosaur National Monument is in western Moffat County and eastern Utah.
