Glen Shaffer of Yampa is out on $5,000 bond from Mesa County after being charged with Aggravated Motor Vehicle Theft, Reckless Endangerment, First Degree Criminal Trespass, Second Degree Burglary, and three counts of Theft. It has to do with a series of thefts one of which was when Shaffer allegedly tried to steal a truck along Hilltop Parkway. The owner heard the truck starting around 5 a.m. in his driveway. He ran out and jumped onto the bed of the truck, broke out the back window to get to the suspect, who then jumped out while the vehicle was in motion.
It also hit an electrical box and knocked out power in the neighborhood. Then Steamboat Springs Police got reports of more things stolen from vehicles, a garage, and neighborhoods in the area. One item was some Apple Air Pods, which the owner was able to track to Yampa, when they were being recharged. Those Air Pods kept going to Grand Junction where Colorado State Patrol officers continued to track them and that’s when they found Glen Shaffer, also allegedly in possession of stolen property including a bike and two e-bikes.
Steamboat Springs Police Sergeant Evan Noble says if it’s important to you, lock it up.
“The Steamboat Springs Police Department would like to remind everyone to lock their vehicles, take their keys out of the vehicle, lock up anything of value.”
Shaffer has a court appearance in Routt County next Tuesday.
