Union Pacific is replacing any old and bad railroad ties from just east of Milner along Highway 40, south to Phippsburg. They’ll be working straight through the City of Steamboat Springs. It’s about 50,000 ties on 32 miles of track. It will make the track safer.
The crew of about 60 Union Pacific workers start work at 4 a.m. and work about 10 hours each day. They start that early to avoid some of the summer heat. They’re from all over, including Utah, Oregon, Arizona, Nebraska, Idaho, California, Illinois, New Mexico, and Washington.
The job should be finished in early September.
Also, they can’t give away the old railroad ties.
