A man from Craig died in a motorcycle crash Sunday night in North Routt County. Colorado State Patrol says the call came in at 5:59 p.m. up on Routt County Road 129, near mile post 24.1. 29-year-old Kevin Gaytanholguin was driving a Suzuki motorcycle, headed southbound, behind a Honda Civic with three people in it, all from Westminster, Colo. CSP said the car slowed and started turning left. The motorcycle lost control, served, and collided into the side of the Civic. The motorcycle driver, was wearing a helmet, and died at the scene. CSP says excessive speed is thought to be a factor but not drugs or alcohol. The three occupants in the car, a man and two young children, were all wearing seatbelts or in carseats. Gaytanholguin’s body was taken by Routt County Coroner Mitch Locke to Fort Collins Monday for an autopsy.
U.S. Senators Bennet and Hickenlooper have announced $79.3 million dollars for Colorado communities in the annual funding bills for 2024. In our region, the City of Craig receives $2,500,000 for the Craig Business and Industrial Park. The Town of Kremmling receives $96,000 for Water Tank Repair. The Pioneers Medical Center Cybersecurity program in Meeker will receive $371,000. Oak Creek gets $2,300,000 for an expansion of the South Routt Medical Center. The Northwest Colorado Visiting Nurses association with Northwest Colorado Health gets $105,000 for an Assisted Living Cooling System. The City of Steamboat Springs receives $1,000,000 for Workforce Housing Pedestrian and Bicycle Connection.
LOCAL COMMUNITIES RECEIVE $$ FROM SENATE APPROPRIATIONS BILLS
Steamboat Springs City Council is holding a special meeting this evening, about the Brown Ranch Annexation. It starts at 5 p.m. in Centennial Hall on 10th Street. Presentations will be made from city staff and the Yampa Valley Housing Authority. City Council is expected to discuss a possible ballot issue committing a portion of the Short Term Rental tax, long term affordability requirements and funding for city services. Public comment starts at 7 p.m. and is limited to one hour.
Moffat County School District is hosting a job fair from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Aug.1, at Craig Middle School. Hiring managers will be there. Jobs include coaches and bus drivers, maintenance, custodians, interpreters, teachers and more. Look for the employment tab at www.MoffatSD.org
Steamboat Springs School District has on-the-spot interviews for open positions from 1-4 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, at the HR offices on 7th Street.
Tuesday, Aug. 1, is registration day for students in the Hayden Valley School District. Parents and guardians, stop by the school at 300 Breeze Basin Boulevard any time until 6 p.m. today. New students will need to bring birth certificates, immunization records, and proof of residency.
Registration opens today for all winter programs for Steamboat Springs Winter Sports Club athletes. Here’s the new executive director for the club, Brian Krill.

Winter Sports Club has over 50 programs, with all levels of winter sports disciplines and commitment levels. There are programs like Tiny Toots for three- and four-year-olds. All second graders learn to ski or ride. SSWSC also partners with Integrated Community and the Mark Satkiewicz Dirt to Snow Legacy Fund to introduce Spanish speakers to skiing and snow sports. And scholarships are available.

Work begins today on the new South Hotel Trails Connection. The new concrete trail will provide access for pedestrians and bikers near the old Fairfield Inn and Homewood Suites area to Walton Creek Trail. It should take about six weeks.

Two Northwest Colorado athletes recently competed at the National High School Rodeo Finals in Gillette, Wyoming. While they didn’t place, we’re still proud they qualified. Katie Jo Knez from Moffat County High School competed in Breakaway Roping.
“Overall Nationals, it was a super good experience again. I just love being able to make it there and qualify with all other people that are great in the nation. It’s just super cool.”
Kael McCarty is a graduate from Steamboat Springs High School, but competed in Bareback Riding with the Moffat County Rodeo team.
“It was really fun. Had a good time. Lot of good people there. I really enjoyed it.”
All 50 states were represented at the National High School Rodeo Championships, along with Australia, Mexico, and Canada.

Perry Mansfield Performing Arts Camp has wrapped up their up their summer intensive youth artist program with a dance performance followed by a production of Matilda Jr. Here’s Steamboat Radio News Intern, Chloe Sachs.
“The Friday and Saturday night shows featured the program’s 37 total students ages 12-15. The students studied at Perry Mansfield for four weeks, and came from all over the nation to study at Steamboat’s historic 110-year-old performing arts camp.”
