Routt County law enforcement says they are cracking down on impaired drivers. Watch for high visibility enforcement through this weekend by Colorado State Patrol, Steamboat Springs Police, and Routt County Sheriff’s officers. Here’s Sergeant Mark Hanson with Colorado State Patrol.

“If you guys are planning on going out to have a couple drinks or do any smoking of marijuana, designate a sober driver and think ahead.”

Extra patrols will be out this weekend looking for unacceptable driving behavior that is associated with impaired drivers, such as speeding, following too closely, and not driving in a designated lane. If you see a driver that you think is impaired, call 911, or *CSP.

ROUTT COUNTY LAW ENFORCEMENT IS CRACKING DOWN ON DUIS THIS WEEK

Local law enforcement in Steamboat Springs will be taking some special driving classes today, and next Wednesday, in the parking lot at Strawberry Park Elementary and Steamboat Springs Middle schools. The parking lots will be closed for the driving tactic sessions, which focus on pursuit driving, vehicle safety, professional police driving, and emergency driving techniques.

CDOT crews are scheduled to re-stripe Highway 40 between Steamboat Springs and Craig, in early to mid-September. It was brought to the attention of the Colorado Department of Transportation after the recent fatal accident on Hwy 40. Striping was fading. We inquired, and were told that CDOT is aware of the paint fading issue regionwide and that it happens every year, and that they are trying their best to refresh the striping on the section of Hwy 40, especially where the accident happened just west of Steamboat Springs.

Anna Stout has launched her campaign for Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District. The mayor of Grand Junction will run in the primary against Adam Frisch for Colorado’s 3rd Congressional District. She has been an unaffiliated voter until early June when she registered as a Democrat. The winner of that primary will run against Republican U.S. Representative Lauren Boebert next year. Moffat and Rio Blanco counties are part of that district.

It is time to take a look around your property and see if there is anywhere that would make a good spot for den, where a bear would bed down for the winter. Christy Bubenheim is the president of Keep Bears Wild in Steamboat Springs.

“Anywhere that a bear could get underneath or in, so under decks or sheds or any outbuildings that have access to underneath. It seems that bears particularly like to choose a den under decks that have hot tubs on top because it’s a lot warmer in there.”

She says if you see a den-like space where a bear could hunker down for the winter, you’ll want to get it closed up now, before the snow starts to fall.

“It’s important now because you don’t want to wait until the snow is falling and the bear is starting to go under your deck to make its den. We need to make sure it’s sealed up now so they don’t have that opportunity. We need to be proactive rather than retroactive on this type of thing.”

Bears can pull off decorative lattice work, so consider an electric fence, or wood, brick or stone to use as a barrier. Remove all food from campers and RVs and make sure they are locked up.

If a bear gets into a crawl space or under your deck, they could give birth, they could rip out wiring and pull down insulation, and do a lot of damage just to make themselves comfortable. Bears will also crawl through a pet door, if you have one.
