The Emerald Mountain Epic was this weekend in Steamboat Springs.

535 competitors started the bike race Saturday, either individually or on a team, for 52 miles. Sunday had 348 runners competing in either the half-marathon or marathon, on Emerald Mountain at Howelsen Hill.

Seventy-six were signed up to compete on BOTH days, for King and Queen of the Mountain. This year’s king is Andrew Farny who grew up in Steamboat.

“It was fun. We had great weather. It wasn’t too hot. Cow Creek lived up to its name. Lots of cows out there.”

Sarah Pizzo of Steamboat Springs is Queen of the Mountain.

Another big winner was Kory Skattum, who lives in Steamboat but is originally from Broomfield. He finished the marathon in 3:11.35.

“It was awesome. It was fun to run on the trails I’ve been training on all summer and just super fun.”

Mark Myers of Steamboat finished the half-marathon in 1:26:01.

Racers came from around the country, and across Colorado, including Kevin Kernan, who works for the power plant in Craig. He hasn’t competed since 2016, and he started training seven weeks ago for the half marathon.

“And I have no good reason why I thought this was a good idea because I really didn’t know what to expect out of this. It might have been a little ambitious for a comeback trail, but it’s done.”

Proceeds from the Emerald Mountain Epic benefit Partners for Youth in Routt and Moffat counties and also Routt County Riders.
