The Move Over Law starts today. You have to move over for disabled vehicles along the side of the road, in addition to emergency responders. Today is “Slow Down, Move Over” Day in Colorado as proclaimed by Governor Polis. About 350 people are struck and killed each year, when outside a disabled vehicle, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

A pair of bills go into effect today, both bipartisan bills co-sponsored by Senator Dylan Roberts. The first creates the Rural Opportunity Office (ROO) within the Office of Economic Development and International Trade. It will support communities transitioning away from coal-based economies, and support programs and make recommendations for economic development policies that impact rural communities.

The second bill provides key resources to farmers and ranchers by expanding eligibility for the Colorado Agricultural Future Loan Program. It provides loans and grants to newer or underrepresented producers.

No parking is allowed on 3rd Street when work is being done, which will be mostly from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Repairs will take a few days.

A black bear bit a man in the arm while he was relaxing in a hammock. Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers are looking for that bear. But it happened in Trinidad, near the Colorado border in the southeast corner of the state, so opposite end from us here.

The Moffat County Balloon Festival ran into some bad weather over the weekend so balloons weren’t able to launch Saturday or Sunday. But there were still fun events all day Saturday at Loudy-Simpson Park.

The Emerald Mountain Epic this weekend in Steamboat Springs had competitors biking for 52 miles or running a half or a full marathon, or doing both to see who is King or Queen of the mountain.

This year’s king is Andrew Farny who grew up in Steamboat.

“It was fun. We had great weather. It wasn’t too hot. Cow Creek lived up to its name. Lots of cows out there.”

Sarah Pizzo of Steamboat Springs is Queen of the Mountain.

Another big winner was Kory Skattum, who lives in Steamboat but is originally from Broomfield. He finished the marathon in 3:11.35.

“It was awesome. It was fun to run on the trails I’ve been training on all summer and just super fun.”

Mark Myers of Steamboat finished the half-marathon in 1:26:01.

Racers came from around the country, and across Colorado, including Kevin Kernan, who works for the power plant in Craig. He hasn’t competed since 2016, and he started training seven weeks ago for the half marathon.

“And I have no good reason why I thought this was a good idea because I really didn’t know what to expect out of this. It might have been a little ambitious for a comeback trail, but it’s done.”

Proceeds from the Emerald Mountain Epic benefit Partners for Youth in Routt and Moffat counties and also Routt County Riders.
