Howelsen Skate Park Improvements Get Underway
Park Will Close This Week To Begin Demolition and Site Prep Work
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-August 16, 2023-The aspen leaves won’t be the only thing changing this fall as the Howelsen Skate Park will also undergo a transformation with the installation of new ramps and other park amenities. Site work will begin this week, resulting in a closure of the existing skate park, likely through the remainder of this year.
“As the oldest skate park in the city’s park system, we are very excited for the new features and site improvements” commented Parks & Recreation Project Manager. “The new park will accommodate all ages and skill levels and provide added public amenities to the Howelsen Park complex”.
The park will close beginning on Thursday, August 17 as Duckels Construction removes the existing skate park structures and begins preparing the site. The new skate park features, including ramps, rails, and decks from the American Ramp Company, will arrive and be installed later this fall. The park will remain closed during this period and the work is expected to be complete by late October.
Funding for the redevelopment of the Howelsen Skate Park was obtained through the city’s annual Capital Improvements Project budget process. The new park was designed by a steering committee consisting of Parks & Recreation staff, local stakeholders, community youth, and skaters with skills ranging from beginner to expert, as well as coaches from area skating programs.
The new park will bring an innovative above ground skate park to the city and serve all skill levels. Features will provide the ideal opportunity for novice skaters to practice and refine their skills before progressing to more advanced lines. In addition, the renovations will include a new concrete sidewalk along the front of the skate park and additional picnic table seating.
