At the Routt County Fair on Saturday, a beautiful custom bench was donated by the Lewis family of Routt County, in honor of their daughter and sister, Lacey, who loved the Routt County Fair. Lacey was a graduate of Steamboat Springs High School, and a long-time 4-H member, with a special love of horses.
Lacey was the youngest of five in the Lewis family. Her family was there there for the dedication, which was read by Lacey’s Father, Mike.
Here’s Lacey’s mom, Cathy Lewis.
“We did that because this was Lacey’s favorite place and we wanted her to be here in remembrance to the friends and community here. And I know she would love that, to have this bench here for her.”
Lacey was 25 years old when she died. She was killed on the Front Range last summer by a woman who hit her in a Vehicular Homicide DUI case. That woman was found guilty of four felony counts and one misdemeanor and she will spend 22 years in prison.
The bench will be outside of the Exhibit Hall at the Routt County Fairgrounds in Hayden. It will come inside during the winter.
Lacey’s brother, Guerin Lewis, sang for the crowd during the afternoon BBQ at the Routt County Fair. It included the song, “When a Cowgirl goes to Heaven,” that he wrote for his sister.
