Colorado Attorney General Phil Weiser held a Town Hall in Steamboat Springs this week, to talk about the proposed $25 billion dollar grocery store merger with the owners of City Market and Safeway stores, of which there are both stores in Steamboat Springs.
“If this merger harms rural Colorado, even if it doesn’t harm urban areas, that’s good enough reason for me to take action to stop it.”
Weiser talked about how there would be only one supply chain into town, if there was a merger, and he is skeptical that both grocery stores would stay open in Steamboat Springs, if the merger happened. He will find out the timeline for the merger, probably in October, and then prepare to go to court to stop it, if necessary.
Colorado Treasurer Dave Young has joined Secretary of State Jena Griswold in being publicly opposed to the merger as well, and asking the Federal Trade Commission to halt the $25 billion deal.

Colorado Governor Jared Polis visited two local preschools in Routt County this week, for the first day of school and the launch of Colorado’s free universal preschool program.
“For the first time in Colorado’s history, every 4-year-old can go to pre-school. As a result, 43% more kids are in pre-school, so those are all families that would have wanted it before and couldn’t afford it. And for those who could, they’re saving about $500 a month which is a big deal considering the cost of living. So it’s really exciting to see how it is being implemented successfully here in Routt County.”

Governor Polis also visited with Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers at Steamboat Lake State Park and took a tour of the lake with Captain Karl at the Steamboat Lake Marina.
