The Dance Team at Steamboat Springs High School is in its second year and there are 30 dancers, with one male on the co-ed team. The dance team has replaced the cheerleading squad at SSHS this year.
SSHS Athletic Director Luke Dewolfe says, “Dance is growing and we’re celebrating that.”
Head Coach Alexa Struss says the dance team is in two divisions. One is performances only, at games and events at the high school. They’ll all dance at the football and basketball games, and possibly volleyball.
A second group of 20 will participate in a CHSAA Dance Team competition in December. They’re calling it the pre-professional group.
There are four seniors on the Steamboat Springs Dance Team. They are Inga Lexa, Scarlet Pepin, Maddie Moss, and Charley Barnes.
Also coaching with Alexa Struss is Assistant Coach Mandy Peterson.
At the Sailors football game against the Moffat County Bulldogs, the Steamboat Dance Team appreciated the extra cheering and support from the Moffat County Cheer Team, who watched and cheered from the field, during the Dance Team’s half-time dance performance. They said it added spirit to the game.
The SSHS Dance Team plans to have some Community Clinics for kids later in the fall, and then in the spring. We’ll let you know.
