The Bureau of Land Management has gathered 122 wild horses from the West Douglas Herd Area. That’s south of Rangely, near the Utah border. The horses are being taken to the holding facility in Canon City where they will be vaccinated and checked by a veterinarian. They’ll then go into the BLM’s wild horse and burro adoption program.

Four of the horses had to be euthanized during the gather. The Bureau of Land Management website reports that an elderly stallion was lame, another stallion had an infected abscess, one stallion had blindness, and another had a broken leg.

The BLM said the horses were gathered because there was limited water and food sources, and they kept going onto private lands.
